The Canary Wharf estate extends over 86 acres and is so called because it was built on a section of the West India Dock that during the 1930s received imports from the Canary Islands. There is currently 10 million square feet of office and retail space constructed and a further 4 million square feet currently under construction. The area constructed extends to eighteen separate office developments, an underground retail centre, a conference and banqueting centre, a Docklands light railway station, a London underground station, several underground car parks as well as a number of four and five star hotels. The 2012 Olympics in the nearby area of Stratford will also have a positive impact on the Canary Wharf area in the coming years.
